“I don’t feel lonely when I’m around them,” he says. “But I love also listening to them. I always make sure I spend some time just seeing what they’re really doing. Especially outside, you know, when you’re alone with them. Because so many people including myself fill in a whole vocabulary for them that is ours and not theirs. I remember spending some time for the first time with Man Ray, my first dog. I didn’t talk that day. I just listened to what he was listening to, the whole aura of smells and sounds and sights and things that he was picking up on during that day. Most people who have dogs see them as their dogs: ‘Come on, boy,’ or ‘Fetch’ or pat, pat. But they’re really teeming with their own thoughts.”

Check out the current issue of the Houston Center for Photography's Spot Magazine for an interview with WW. This question was one of our favorites:
JL: What was the first photograph you ever saw?
WW: That one's locked in the past. I grew up during WWII -- my father was a POW actually. I didn't see him until 1945 after he was liberated... So it was probably a family picture of my father in the Air Force. I remember seeing one picture that I'm still pretty attached to, of my father reading to me and my two really pretty cousins when I was around five or four -- it's a classic staged photograph. We weren't from a family who had cameras, so we'd have to arrange for pictures. Some families in the 40s and 50s grew up with cameras. We weren't one of them.

The latest issue of Four and Sons features an interview with WW. Here's WW on falling in love with Flo:
"I think I fell in love with Flo when she started doing things that I
didn’t expect from her. She’s a difficult dog to live with...but when it comes to working, she
cares so much about it and is so proud to be doing it, that it’s kind of
heartbreaking. And then, when you look at the photographs, the image
kind of burns into your mind and they become your muse."
